Costs and funding for short-term experiences
Participating in a short-term global experience can be expensive, particularly if you choose to participate as a not-for-credit student.
Depending on the length of your program, we estimate it will costÌý$5,000-16,000 AUDÌýto cover host experience fees, flights, visas, insurance, travel and living expenses.
It is important to draft a budget to ensure you can afford to participate.
UQ Global Experiences Grants
Global Experiences Grants are awarded to enable as many UQ students as possible to enhance their employability throughÌýa GE-supportedÌýenrichment experience.Ìý Funding will prioritise students from underrepresented groups who have never undertaken an enrichment experience.
All students who have been accepted into a program supported by the Global Experiences team will be automatically considered for a grant.
Grants are based on the availability of funding and will vary depending on duration, learning mode and location of the activity. The below grants are indicative only.
Funding is awarded by a selection committee with theÌýfollowing criteria being taken into consideration:
- Students from underrepresented groups (students who are First Nations, low SES background, from regional and remote areas and students with disabilities)
- Students who have not previously completed any of the following enrichment experiences offered by the Global Experiences Team:
- GEÌýShort-Term Study Global Experience
- GEÌýSemester-based Exchange
- Academic merit at the time of application (GPA as it appears on your UQ Studies Report)
- No other grants or scholarships have been awarded either by UQ or external parties for the experience
Eligibility:
Applicants must:
- have been accepted into a short-term global experienceÌýby the Global Experiences TeamÌý(GE)
- No funding will be allocated to students undertaking domestic virtual experiences, including theÌý U21 Global Citizens program.
- No grants will be paid to students who have been awarded an exchange or short-term scholarship or grant offered by, but not limited to, NCP, Westpac, UQ faculties, host institutions and DACKEP.

Please note that funding is not guaranteed even if all selectionÌýcriteria are met. Funding should therefore not be aÌýfactor when developing your budget.

New Colombo Plan Mobility Funding
°Õ³ó±ðÌýNew Colombo Plan Mobility Funding, provided by the Australian Government, subsidises the cost of participating in for-credit short-term experiences within the Indo-Pacific region.Ìý
When you submit your application to the Global Experiences team, you are automatically considered for this grant, if you meet theÌýNCP Eligibility Criteria.
Applicants will need to submit supporting documentation (host acceptance, bank details) by the deadline indicated on the relevant program information page.ÌýÌý

Centrelink
If you receive assistance from Centrelink and are completing your overseasÌýshort-term experience for-credit, you can arrange to continue to receive these payments while you are overseas.
Centrelink requires the following information in writing from UQ:
- your study load while overseas
- the duration of your overseas study, including specific dates
- confirmation that your overseas studyÌýwill countÌýtowards your UQ degree program
You canÌýÌýfrom the Global Experiences TeamÌýonce you have been officially accepted by your host university.

Tuition and program fees
Study abroad tuition fees
If the short-term global experience you are interested in is aÌý'Study Abroad' mode, you willÌýpay tuition fees directly to the host.Ìý
Exchange tuition fees
If the short-term global experience mode is Exchange you will be enrolled in 2-4 units of UQ EXCH codes based on our approved experience, and therefore, will pay tuition fees directly to UQ instead of the host. You will pay all other associated program and administration fees directly to the host.ÌýRefer to Enrolment at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø to understand how your exchange enrolments work and the codes you will be enrolled in.
International students: Please refer to the for the exchange tuition fees.
Domestic Commonwealth Supported Students: The for each courseÌýwill be based on the semester of enrolment, and your cohort. See the for details, including the student contribution amount for EXCH courses.
Domestic full fee-paying students: The fees payable for each course will depend on the semester of enrolment and program level (UG or PG). Refer to the relevant for exchange tuition costs.
Administrative/program fees
You are responsible for paying any fees related to the delivery and administration of the short-term global experience.
It is important you confirm with the host university what is included/excluded in these fees.
The host university will have deadlines relating to the payment of these fees and it is your responsibility to make the payments, in full, by the appropriate deadline.
Travel costs
Flights
You are responsible for researching, booking, and paying for any flights and/or travel associated with the short-term global experience.
Students are advisedÌýnotÌýto book non-refundable travel until they receive acceptance from the host universityÌýand confirmation of their visa.
Visa
You are responsible for researching, applying for, and paying any associated fees required to obtain an appropriate visa for the duration of your short-term global experience.

Insurance
You may have to obtain specific insurance to meet the visa and/or host university requirements for participation in a short-term global experience.
Approved short-term program participants are covered by UQ’s Corporate Travel Insurance. Read the UQ Travel Insurance PolicyÌýto identify if you will need to purchase additional insurance.Ìý
Accommodation fees
You are responsible for organising and paying for your accommodation.
Host universities will often provide accommodation options at a set fee or even include accommodation in the cost of the program.Ìý
