HASS Global Experiences Academic Considerations
Studying abroad can be a valuable part of your academic journey, but the process requires careful planning. For some HASS programs, not all courses are eligible for overseas credit, and prerequisite knowledge must often be matched precisely.
This page provides program-specific guidance to help you navigate the overseas study process, including important academic considerations and excluded courses. Please review the relevant section for your program to ensure you meet UQ鈥檚 academic requirements while making the most of your global experience.
All students should be aware that听it鈥檚 generally easier to gain approval for elective courses, especially general electives, rather than core courses. Going on exchange in the last semester of study is not recommended.
Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Western Civilisation) (Honours)
The Centre for Western Civilisation encourages students to participate in a global experience through a semester-based exchange, short-term study (for credit or not for credit), or internship. The University has a team dedicated to assisting students with听global experiences, and we encourage you to explore this as early as possible so you can take advantage of this opportunity.
Following the successful completion of a semester-based exchange or short-term study opportunity, the Faculty will apply any eligible credit to your studies report. Please note, while you must pass your courses at the overseas institution for credit to be applied, the grades obtained from this study will not be applied to your UQ program and will not contribute to the GPA required to progress into the BAdvHum(Hons) Honours Field of Study.
Semester-based Exchange
We have built into our Study Plans a semester that best suits a semester-based exchange for the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Western Civilisation) (Honours). Core HUMN and all WCIV courses cannot be taken on exchange as these are bespoke courses to UQ, and no equivalent courses are available elsewhere.

When:听Semester 2 of year 2 is the best time for exchange, which requires early planning in the first year.
Be mindful of any prior study requirements of the overseas institution, especially if they require you to have studied for more than one year at 51吃瓜网 before studying with them.

Short-term Global Experiences
You may be eligible to take part in a Short-term Study experience, either as a for-credit or not-for-credit student. If seeking credit, courses can only be credited towards general electives. You can also consider a Global Enrichment experience.
Bachelor of Education dual degree
Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education dual degree must consult directly with the听听regarding their interest in exchange and to plan their studies accordingly. Your school will provide you with a waiver that you must complete.听
Short-term Global Experiences
You may be eligible to take part in a听Short-term Study experience, usually as a not-for-credit student. In some cases, credit may be possible if a suitable course is found. You can also consider a听Global Enrichment experience.

Short-term Global Experiences
You may be eligible to take part in a Short-term Study experience, either as a for-credit or not-for-credit student. If seeking credit, courses can only be credited towards LLB(Hons) electives only. You can also consider a Global Enrichment experience.
Bachelor of International Studies
The Bachelor of International Studies (BIS) includes a mandatory semester-based exchange as a core program requirement. While exchange is compulsory for BIS students, there are specific academic requirements and planning considerations to be aware of.
Exchange eligibility
Even though exchange is mandatory for the BIS program, students must still meet the minimum eligibility requirements for semester-based exchange, as outlined in the standard exchange criteria (including GPA and enrolment requirements).
Unit selection on exchange
The BIS program includes 6 units of general electives, which students are required to reserve for completion during their exchange semester. Careful course planning is essential to ensure these electives are available for use on exchange.
Learning from the International Experience course (COMU3060 / COMU3065)
All BIS students must complete the Learning from the International Experience course (COMU3060 or COMU3065). This is a year-long course that commences during the exchange semester and is completed in the semester following the exchange.
Due to the structure of this course, BIS students:
- Are encouraged to enrol in 8 units on exchange, in addition to the COMU3060 / COMU3065 course
- May instead choose to enrol in 6 units on exchange, plus the COMU course, if preferred
- Cannot undertake their exchange in their final semester (unless completing a full-year exchange)
Full-year exchange option
BIS students may be able to participate in a full-year exchange with careful academic planning. To do this successfully, students must be able to complete the full COMU3060 / COMU3065 course requirements while overseas. This option should be discussed early with academic advisors and the Global Experiences team.
Short-term Global Experiences
In addition to your mandatory exchange, you may be eligible to take part in a Short-term Study experience, either as a for-credit or not-for-credit student. You can also consider a Global Enrichment experience.
Bachelor of Music
Students enrolled in the听Bachelor of Music must consult directly with the听听regarding their interest in exchange and to plan their studies accordingly. Your school will provide you with a waiver that you must complete.
