BEL Global Experiences Academic Considerations
For Business, Economics and Law (BEL) Faculty students, studying abroad –Ìýwhether on exchange or a short-term program – can be a valuable part of your academic and professional journey. To get the most out of a global experience, careful planning is essential. Review the requirements and key considerations belowÌýand contact the International Mobility Manager to discuss your options.Ìý
Course requirements for Global Experiences
Prerequisites
You must completeÌýany prerequisites for the courses you want to enrol in for your global experience. These are listed in the course profile on the . Conditional approval for courses will not be given.
Core courses
It's strongly recommended that you complete your core and major compulsory courses at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. In exceptional circumstances only, and where options are limited, you may be permitted to take these courses via a global experience. Courses required for research or capstone requirements must be completed at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.Ìý
Electives courses
Elective courses are the most suitable option for global experiences as they are more likely to be approved by the BEL Faculty and provide greater flexibility when enrolling at a host university.
Postgraduate-level courses
If you are an undergraduate student, you may be allowed to take postgraduate courses overseas if:
- your GPA is 5.0 or higher
- you meet the course prerequisites
- you understand the higher difficulty level
- BEL Faculty approves the credit
Final enrolment is at the host university's discretion.
Credit for prior learning
You must complete mostÌýof your degree at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. If you have reached the maximum credit limit from prior study at another institution, you will not be permitted to undertake a semester‑based exchange.
If you have reached the maximum credit limit and have not previously completed an exchange or short‑term experience, you may be permitted to complete one short‑term program for up to 2 units of credit.
Refer to theÌýÌýfor the exact credit limits.Ìý
Credit transfer for short-term global experiences
To receive credit for Short‑term Global Experiences (virtual or in person):
- You must apply through UQ Global Experiences (GEx) before the application deadlines.
- Credit will only be granted if:
- the experience is pre‑approved by both GEx and BEL
- you submit an official academic transcript following successful completion.
Retrospective credit will not be granted, even if the course is listed in the or has been approved for other students.
Industry accreditation
We strongly advise that you do not take core or accreditation‑required courses while participating in an exchange or short-term global experience, as this may affect eligibility for professional accreditation in Australia.
This is particularly important for students in:
- Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting major
- Bachelor of Advanced Business (Hons) – Accounting major.
We recommend checking requirements with the relevant professional accreditation body.
Postgraduate opportunities
If you're a postgraduate student interested in studying abroad, contact the BEL International Mobility Manager to discuss your options as:
- many postgraduate programs are not suitable for semester exchange due to curriculum and timing constraints
- not allÌýpartner universities accept coursework master's students.
Short-term global experiences are often a more suitable option.
